The Caimaners and Field Guides - Naturalist guides

The most important distinguishing point of Refúgio Ecológico Caiman in its ecotourism operation - the Caiman Lodge - is the existence of the resident naturalist guides. Living in the Pantanal in the day by day, the guides have an incomparable knowledge about the Pantanal natural history, understanding the season dynamics and the characteristics of each one.
The guides are continually trained in hospitality operation, technique aspects of the Pantanal biology, guiding techniques and environmental interpretation.
All the tours are led by two guides, a Caimaner and a Field Guide.
The Caimaners
They are young, bilingual, graduate students - preferably in the areas of biology, ecology and tourism - who accompany the guests in all activities, explaining and interpreting Pantanal, its flora, fauna and culture.
In general, such young people remain working in the REC for a period that varies from 01 and 02 years. For many of them, it is their first job after college. Today, REC is considered a school of Pantanal guides and throughout its 20 years of existence has trained, provided capacity and employed dozens of young people.

The Field Guides
The young university students are not the only ones granted with those opportunities, for the CER seeks to identify and provide capacity to native guides, sons of the land, who begin their work as field guides in the REC by always acting in partnership with the Caimaner in his/her outings with the hotel guests.
Currently, Caiman has amongst its Caimaners, Victor Nascimento, a young local inhabitant who started as a field guide and, today, is an internationally recognized reference in bird watching in Pantanal and Brazil.
